What Is a Coincident Peak?

PJM Interconnection operates the electrical grid for 13 states in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest. Each summer, PJM identifies the 5 hours of highest total grid demand - these are the 5 Coincident Peaks.

Your annual capacity charge - a significant portion of your electricity bill - is calculated based on how much power you consumed during those 5 specific hours. A large energy user who reduces load on Coincident Peak days can save tens of thousands of dollars per year.

The challenge: Coincident Peak days are only confirmed after summer ends. You must predict them in real time. That is exactly what Coincident Peak Watch does.

Weather Fetch

Every morning the system fetches 7-day forecasts from National Weather Service stations covering the PJM region.

2

AI Scoring

A proprietary AI and machine learning model trained on 11+ years of PJM load and weather data scores each day for Coincident Peak probability using dozens of engineered temperature, humidity, and grid demand features.

3

Risk Classification

Each day is classified as Critical, High, Medium, or Low risk. Critical days trigger immediate curtailment recommendations for the 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST window.

4

Morning Alert

A professional email report lands in your inbox by 6:00 AM EST every morning during Coincident Peak season - giving you a full day to prepare before the peak window opens.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
PJM Interconnection operates the electrical grid for Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington DC. If your electricity is delivered through PJM and you pay capacity charges, Coincident Peak Watch is designed for you.
The model achieved 100% recall on all known Coincident Peak days from 2015 through 2025 - 55 Coincident Peak days across 11 years with zero misses. The model generates approximately 9 false alarms per year, meaning roughly 9 days per season that score elevated but turn out not to be Coincident Peak days. We believe a false alarm is far less costly than missing an actual peak.
On Critical days we recommend curtailing non-essential load between 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM EST. This includes dimming lights, raising thermostat setpoints, delaying large equipment cycles, and shifting flexible loads to off-peak hours. The specific actions depend on your facility and operations - Coincident Peak Watch tells you when to act, you decide how.
The official PJM Coincident Peak measurement period is June 1 through September 30 each year. The 5 highest-demand hours during this window set your capacity charges for the following year. Coincident Peak Watch begins daily monitoring on May 15 to ensure you are prepared from day one of the season.
